However, this tool relies on humans to function, requiring the proper training and prompting in order to be helpful. This is called prompt engineering, which is the art and science of what you say and how you say it when using AI. Prompt engineering rewires how the user thinks, leading them to effective commands to yield the best results from their chosen AI model.

Studies show that over 80% of IT professionals think they can use AI. However, only 12% actually have the skills to perform prompt engineering effectively. Because of this, there is a pressing need for AI literacy in many fields, with as many as 2 in 3 leaders admitting that they will not hire candidates without AI skills. Many professionals know the basics, but lack the in-depth knowledge needed to advance their careers. With the current 50% hiring gap between AI jobs and AI roles, AI literacy is now more important than ever.

Learning to structure and craft an effective instruction that generative AI models can easily interpret and follow is an art. There are several ways to structure a prompt, including chain-of-thought, generated knowledge prompting, and even non-text prompting. There are even more options when it comes to images and video, with negative prompts, textual inversion, and prompt injection.

With over 70% of leaders believing that AI skill gaps must be addressed, it is clear that learning these new skills will be vital to the AI revolution. Whether it’s re-skilling, upskilling, or cross-skilling, there are resources for everyone to up their AI literacy for a brighter professional future.

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool that has reshaped the way we do work.
